Lincoln Cathedral is one of the high points of Gothic architecture; a superbly harmonious showcase of decorative art. The west front, with its Norman arches set in a 13th-century screen, is quite simply stunning. The wealth of statuary detail alone is worth hours, if not days, of examination. The history of Lincoln Cathedral goes back to 1073.

St. Hugh began a major rebuilding project in the emerging Early English Gothic style, but died in 1200 before his plan was completed. The east end of the cathedral was moved each time the building was enlarged. The eastern wall of the Norman cathedral (1073) was in the middle of what is now St. Hugh's Choir.. Lincoln Cathedral was the first.

Remigius constructed the original Lincoln Cathedral in its current location, completed it in 1092, and died two days before it was dedicated on the 7th of May, 1092. A fire damaged the wooden roofing in 1124. The cathedral was repaired and enlarged by Alexander, but it was significantly damaged by an earthquake 40 years later, in 1185.
